Yesterday, I came back to Berlin after only four months to find out that my favorite cafe is closed. You can imagine the disappointment. I spent so many afternoons there each time I was in Berlin. And their breakfast was just a great idea: Instead of preset combinations, they gave you a form to fill in so you could choose exactly what and how much of it you wanted. It’s a pretty simple idea, of course, but those seem to be the ideas that work best.
On the whole, Berlin doesn’t seem to have changed much. I went to the Volkspark in Friedrichsain yesterday, it was a wonderful day. I hadn’t seen the whole park before, only the open air theatre, it’s really worth a visit. There’s a fountain called “the Fairy Tale spring” or something to that effect that’s just spectacular. (Mental note: Carry camera at all times)
Of course Berlin is full of excellent cafes! I had a great “kasefruhstuck” today – 8 types of cheese and six types of bread, and fruit! This will be a cheesy summer, I am afraid.
I was turned down at the theatre today: The Maxim Gorki has a tiny studio theatre that’s doing Brecht’s Good Person of Shetzuan, but they never have tickets at the door. It’s the second time it happened to me at that theatre, for the same show! It makes me think it must be good? I’m not very fond of the Gorki, their shows tend to feel like museum pieces. Well, I will be in Berlin for three months, so I might get another chance.
